Remodelers with the most Google reviews

Ratings and review counts were read from Google Maps on October 25, 2026. Each card also says whether we have checked the company's county license yet, with a link so you can check it yourself.

Both counties license remodelers

Nassau and Suffolk each license home improvement contractors, even though New York State does not, and the Attorney General says anyone doing that work in either county must hold the county license. Both counties run a free lookup by name or license number.

How a request works

  1. Describe the job

The room, your town, how soon, and anything you already picked out. One short form.

  2. Remodelers call you

Up to three companies that do that kind of work in your area get in touch, usually by phone, to set up a visit.

  3. Compare in writing

Ask each for a written scope with materials, a payment schedule and their county license number, then line the quotes up side by side.

Does a remodeler need a license on Long Island?

Yes. The New York Attorney General's office says home improvement contractors must be licensed in Nassau and Suffolk counties, along with New York City, Westchester, Putnam and Rockland. The license comes from the county where the house is, not from the state.

What does a home improvement contractor cover that a plumber does not?

Nassau's licensing FAQ exempts plumbers, electricians, architects and engineers from the home improvement license only while they work in their own licensed trade. In Nassau, the towns, cities and villages license plumbers and electricians, so a bathroom job can involve two different licenses.

How much should I put down?

Nassau County's consumer checklist calls a down payment under 15 percent fair. The Attorney General's office says never to pay the full price upfront and to hold back the final payment until the work is done.

Does it cost anything to request quotes here?

No. It is free for homeowners. Contractors can pay to be featured, and featured listings are labeled on the page.
